A record number of 70 laureates and 672 young scientists from 89 countries participated in the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting.

In 1950, as Europe was emerging from the devastation of WWII, an important initiative took root in Lindau, Germany. The first Lindau Conference organizers sent out invitations to the winners of the highest international science awards to meet for a 3-4 day congress to offer European scientists knowledge of the present state of science from the mouths of its most qualified representatives. Today the Lindau Meetings and the underlying idea of creating a platform to facilitate encounters between Nobel Laureates and the world's best young scientists enjoy widespread support.
This summer, from the 28th of June through the 3rd of July, 70 Nobel Laureates and 672 young researchers are expected to participate in the 65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Interdisciplinary Meeting. Due to the prestige of the meeting and the profile of the speakers, only approximately 50% of candidates for attendance, all nominated by the academic partner institutions, are finally granted an invitation.
ICREA (the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies), one of the Academic partners of the Lindau meetings, put forth a list of 6 nominees from research groups led by ICREA professors to attend this summer’s event. Remarkably, five of the six candidates, including ICFO PhD student Jordi Tura from the Quantum Optics Theory group led by ICREA Professor Maciej Lewenstein, were selected to attend.

The project consisted in creating an entertainment application for mobile and PC, using the API provided by Ericsson. The user was supposed to present challenges to his/her friends, which should try to pass them while presenting graphical/location/audio proofs. Their success/failure would determine their position in a global reputation ranking.

On October 25, 2013, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft received the Prince of Asturias Award in recognition of its international cooperation. The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft doubled the €50,000 prize money from its own funds and established a grant programme to fund research residencies for outstanding doctoral students and postdocs from Spain at a Max Planck Institute.

PAU Special Recognition is awarded to all students in Catalonia who obtained a mark of 9 or higher in the June sitting of the university entrance exams (PAU).

CIRIT award for the high school research project Virtual Building Evacuation Simulator, supervised by Xavier Amargant and co-supervised by Dr. Xavier Cufí and Dr. Jordi Regincós. This prize is awarded to the considered 70 best projects in Catalonia.

Because of this, it was also invited to participate in Expo-Science 2006, a european-scope exhibition, held in Tarragona. 16th July 2006 - 23rd July 2006.
